Mariano Paredes y Arrillaga (c. 7 January 1797 – 7 September 1849) was a Conservative Mexican general and president. He took power via a coup d'état in 1846. He was the president at the start of the Mexican–American War, and was himself overthrown on 28 July 1846.

Bravo served as a vice president of the Republic (1824–27) and as president for a time during the 1830s. During the Mexican-American War (1846–48), he also was at times acting president, as well as commander of the departments of Puebla, Veracruz, Oaxaca, and Tabasco. President James K. Polk made it his goal to enforce manifest destiny, no matter what the cost. He told the British the Oregon Territory would not be shared and this ultimately led to the Pig War (U.S.). The signing of the treaty in 1846 was important to Manifest Destiny because it showed the U.S. was willing to fight for westward expansion.
